Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection

Image
Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection is a collection of roughly 40 single-player logic games written by the titular Simon Tatham. The game was originally made to be a cross-compatible small puzzle collection that was available across platforms, as the author was annoyed that many small games were only available on one platform such as Unix. The game was made as a personal collection of Simon's, though he would release the game to the public. The author stated that the games in the collection were not his invention; they are mostly re-implementations of existing game, and some of the code were even written by other authors. Originally, the game is made for computers, though an Android version would be made by Chris Boyle. This Android version is the primary subject for this review.                                                           ...

Vector Pinball

Image
Vector Pinball is an open-source arcade pinball game for android developed by the Dozingcat software. It is a very simple pinball game, both in terms of graphics and gameplay. The game even fits snugly onto 6 MB; roughly the size of three or less phone camera photos. Nevertheless, the game still has some things going for it, especially on a boring, slow day.                                                                                                                                                                                       ...

Lexica

Image
Lexica is an open-source word-puzzle game initially developed by Peter Serwylo as a fork of Lexic. The game is primarily centered around finding words in a jumble of letters; you have a grid of letters, and you must find words using the jumbled mess. To form words, you'll choose a letter and then drag your finger to the neighboring letters until the combination of all highlighted letters form a word.                                                                                                                                                                          ...

Mindustry

Image
Mindustry is a free and open source strategy game developed by Anuke. The game is a hybrid between factory/logistics game (e.g. Factorio) and tower defense. The main premise of Mindustry is stategy and logistics; mine for resources, move the resources around, put them in factories to produce different resources, generate electricity for power, and hook every machinery to each other into an elaborate system of ordinance and production. It is a pretty complex strategy game with deep depths and vast possibility.                                                                                                                                           ...

Unciv

Image
Unciv is a free and open source 4X (abbreviation of explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) strategy game developed by Yair Morgenstern (known online as yairm210). The game is described as an Android and Desktop remake of the game Civilization V by Firaxis, and it aims to play similarly to said game. As the game it is based on, the goal behind Unciv is to create a prosperous civilization and reach the goal (such as building the Utopia project, defeat all other civilization, or win United Nations vote) before other civilization does. You are able to build buildings, conduct research, create units (builders, soldiers, etc), enact policies, erect cities, and more all in pursuit of reaching victory.                                                                                     ...

Burger Party

Image
Burger Party is an open-source time management game developed by Aurélien Gâteau (otherwise known as agateau on the internet). The game is available on Android, and a PC port running under Java is also available. The game is primarily a time management game; the kind of game where the goal is to complete the objective(s) as fast as possible before the time runs out while making as few mistakes as possible. In this case, the goal is to create a burger following the customer's order as fast as possible without putting the wrong ingredients out of order. That may seem simple, but this game can be surprisingly difficult and frantic at times as you are quickly chased by time to serve the order without messing up.                                                                                 ...

SuperTuxKart

Image
SuperTuxKart is an open-source 3D arcade racing game developed by the SuperTuxKart Team. It is mostly reminiscent of other kart-racing video games, especially Mario Kart series. However, the game still has its own charm which makes the game stand out as more than just cheap clones.                                                                                                                                                                                                             ...

Code Word

Image
Code Word is an open-source word-puzzle game for android developed by Jake Rosin of Peace Ray LLC. The game is primarily centered around guessing a word similar to Wordle. The game appeared to originate as an over-engineered Wordle solver though it would evolve into said game as development continued. The developer also mentioned being inspired by various other games including Jotto, Mastermind, Bulls and Cows, and Absurdle.                                                                                                                                                                   ...

Asuna

Image
Asuna is a free and open-source game developed for Luanti and released by EmptyStar. The game is primarily a collection of various (mostly unrelated) mods for Luanti that is combined into a single game (not dissimilar to "modpacks" in Minecraft) with heavy focus on exploration and world generation. The game is based on Minetest Game (historically the base game typically used to build Luanti games), and it is designed to be compatible with mods designed for Minetest Game. Luanti ContentDB tagged the game as Minetest Game Improved.                                                                                                                                     ...

Mineclonia

Mineclonia is a free and open-source game developed for Luanti. It is a fork of VoxeLibre. It is mostly based to VoxeLibre but with some differences, as listed on its description page. As with the game it is forked from, Mineclonia is primarily made to resemble Minecraft in terms of gameplay and mechanics.                                                                                                                                                                                                       ...

Luanti

Image
Luanti (formerly known as Minetest) is a free and open source game engine primarily focused around the creation of voxel (block/cube) games. Contrary to most other entries in this blog, Luanti is not a game in the strictest sense; rather, it is a platform which allows people to build games on. In effect, Luanti is similar to Roblox, where it functions as a platform to make and play games instead of being a game by itself. Various games and mods (which adds content to the game) have been developed for the platform which you can play, each varying in gameplay and design.                                                                                                                         ...
